Super Thrifty

My mom found this mirror for me for $1.  Can you believe it?  She is the queen of thrifting.  I wasn't loving the dated color or style so much but knew some paint would make a world of difference.

I always have such good intentions of taking step by step pictures on how to achieve this finish, but then I find myself covered in paint and stain with no free hand to snap a picture.  So, I'll just tell you how I did it because it was really easy.  First I just painted it a nice shade of gray.  After it was good and dry, I painted some dark stain on with a sponge brush and then wiped it away with a damp cloth.  Some of the paint actually ended up coming off when I wiped off the stain because I didn't wait quite long enough.  I actually like the end result though because it gave it a more weathered, distressed look.

I used the same technique on this mirror too.  Happy weekend!

Country Blue

Do you remember when this shade of country blue was popular?  along with all the hearts and geese?  Well, I ran across these two little lamps at Goodwill and loved the classic "ginger jar" shape and knew that I had the perfect lampshades at home to go with them.  They just needed a quick coat of cream spraypaint (or ivory silk to be exact)

I used a little of this to prime them first to make sure the paint would adhere to the slick glass surface.  You can get it at Lowe's for around $4.

Then painted them with this

then I added a pair of lampshades that I'd been saving for the perfect pair of lamps.  Here's one of them but they look identical.  Pardon the plastic that's still on the shades I'm taking these down to my booth and wanted to leave the plastic on to protect them.

and a random side note, my latest little Goodwill find....

I've said it a million times (and I'm sure I'll say it again) but it's always amazing what a little coat of spraypaint will do!

Happy Weekend!

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Yellow Blanket

Believe it or not, one of the most common questions I get asked is where I got the yellow blanket at the foot of our bed in our master bedroom.  Although this may seem like an odd question to be so popular, I'm not surprised because I had the hardest time finding a blanket for the foot of the bed that was the right shade of yellow.  People are always surprised with my answer.  I got it at Goodwill.  Unfortunately, that doesn't really help people in their search, so I decided to do a roundup of some similar yellow blankets.

Here's mine:  (for more pics of our master bedroom click the picture in the sidebar)

and some similar lovelies that are hopefully what some of you are looking for!

love the color and texture of this one of a kind of find on Etsy

cute throw from West Elm

or (I think this would be the route I would go) you could get a simple, plain white blanket like this one from Macy's....

add a little yellow RIT dye and you have a perfect yellow blanket in just the color you want!

The RIT dye website has a link where you can find recipes for just the right shade of yellow, pretty cool.

Teen Glam

After we completed the edesign for her guest bedroom my client I mentioned yesterday wanted to move on to her teen daughter's bedroom.  She wanted it to be glamorous but also a little edgy.  The inspiration for this room stemmed from a fabulous duvet she scored from Target's oh so popular Missoni Collection.

sadly it's no longer available but check out these clearanced options here.

We mixed grays and, blacks to keep things grounded and a little more edgy, with pops of hot pink and mustard.  I love this color combination.  In fact, if my hubby weren't opposed (which I'm sure he is) I would be tempted to add pops of hot pink to our master bedroom.  Anyways, onto the design board...

We tweaked it a little by adding mirrored side tables and more sophisticated lamps at the client's request

I think it's so great that she wanted to do this for her daughter.  I would have loved this room as a teen, heck I would love it even now! :)

Thursday

edesign

My edesigns have been keeping me busy lately.  This client wanted to redo her guest bedroom without spending a fortune.  Since it was going to be used for guests we chose a gender neutral color scheme that would work with some of the existing pieces she already had in the room.  The inspiration piece for this room was the beautiful lamps.  I knew they were right the moment I saw them and thankfully my client loved them too.

(as a courtesy to my paying clients I do not share sources for my edesign boards)

Check back tomorrow for the design board we did for her teen daughter's bedroom!

Sparkle

I wanted to add a little sparkle in the nursery while still keeping things classy.  I wasn't sure exactly where I wanted to add the pop of sparkle until I found this pillow at Marshall's.  It was the perfect size and color and just the amount of glamour the nursery needed.  I think baby girl is going to love it, after all what girl doesn't love some bling!
