DIY Succulent Mirror

This is one of my favorite projects from the Home Depot Style Challenge.  I really wanted to incorporate succulents, because I love them, and they are just so pretty!  We needed a focal point above our outdoor fireplace and I thought some sort of hanging succulent planter would be perfect.  I wanted it to be a little different than the typical ones that you see, so I turned it into a mirror.

Start with two frames.  You can choose whatever sizes you like.  The smaller frame I used was an 8 x 10 and the larger one was a 16 x 20.  I purchased them premade from a craft store because I didn't have the equipment to do all the corner cuts, and of course purchasing them was easier.

Next, you are going to build two frames to create the sides of the planter.  You want them to be basically the same size as your frames.  I chose to use cedar wood for this.  After your frames are in place, attach chicken wire using a staple gun.

I used gorilla glue to attach my mirror to the back of the smaller frame.  Then you will need to attach the the frames to the other frames with the chicken wire attached to it.  I just screwed them on from the front.

I filled it with a little moss to help hold the dirt in.  I think I would maybe skip this step next time or use less moss because it made it difficult to plant the succulents.

Then fill the back with dirt and attach a piece of plywood to hold it all in place.  Flip your planter over and plant the succulents.  You'll just poke them through the holes in the chicken wire.  Then, you'll want to leave the planter flat for a while so the succulents can take root.  I left mine flat for about a month.

It's a bit confusing to explain, but if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that I can keep them alive.  So far so good!  Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
