Yellow Bamboo Hutch

If you follow me on instagram (dwellingsbydevore) you saw a little peek at this bamboo hutch I picked up from Craigslist for a steal.  I've been really drawn to bamboo furniture lately and although it's a trendy thing right now, I feel like it's a classic that I'll love for a long time.

(this is the listing photo)

It's going to go in the office where the black hutch currently is.  I know what you're thinking.  Didn't you just give that hutch a makeover?  Yes, but this bamboo piece is just what I was looking for and I think I'll be able to sell the other one on Craigslist for at least what I bought this one for.  It's served us well while we've had it, but it's time for a change.

Here's the dilemma.  What color do I paint the new hutch?  I feel like faux bamboo furniture looks awesome when it's painted a bright bold color.  Here's a picture of the other side of the office.  It will go on the opposite wall.

Somehow yellow has been creeping into my rooms lately as an accent color.  I've never really thought of yellow as my favorite color and I was actually kind of tired of it after having it in our Old Master Bedroom for so long.  But then I find myself being drawn to it in our new home.  So, I'm thinking of maybe painting it yellow.  I don't want it to look tacky or ridiculous so picking the right shade will be crucial.  I'm thinking I will probably keep the inside white to keep it from feeling too overwhelming.  My husband thinks I should go more neutral in case I change my mind, but I'm so torn.  It's been sitting in our garage way too long so it's time or me to make a decision!

I'm thinking something along the lines of this.

I'm also thinking about painting the top half of the room black or maybe doing grasscloth.  There is crown molding around the ceiling and the lower half has molding as well and is painted white.  This space is really open to the rest of the downstairs (no doors or anything) so I have to keep in mind how it will flow with the rest of the downstairs.

So what do you think?  Am I totally crazy for wanting to paint it yellow or can you see the vision for it?        Do you have a suggestion for the *perfect* shade of yellow?  I guess if it doesn't work out I'm only out the cost of a quart of paint so I think I might just go for it.

  1. Oh i agree with Julia, it is a great piece and I love using a bright color. Go for it, you can always paint it again if you don't like it.

  2. Go for the color! Especially if you keep the inside white, it will always be easy to repaint later if you want to. A graphic print on the back panel would look amazing too! I always think "bumblebee" if there's too much yellow and black together, but I know whatever you end up doing will look amazing.

  6. I'm loving this bright yellow idea! Yellow is hard but I think you're on the right track. Pastel yellow kind of reads 'baby's room', but that strong yellow color on your boxes in your office is perfect. If it were mine I'd probably paint it cherry red, but that's obviously not gonna work for your space. ;) Gorgeous piece...

  7. I'd stay with yellow and white, as it would bring balance to have yellow sprinkled throughout the room. I would also add some small touches of gold to the hutch (perhaps on the bamboo panel edging and a modern design over the willow branches?) so that it would echo the other furniture pieces in the room. Enjoy your hutch and the creative juices it summons!

  11. I’m no help because that piece could be painted black and lined with the grasscloth, or yellow painted black inside, really lots of options but I’ve been following your blog for quite some time and no one can work the color yellow like you do! Can’t wait to see it!

  12. That's what I'm thinking, I think I'm going to just go for it! Maybe add a little leopard to the back, who knows? I've always loved your bold green hutch!

  13. Thank you Laurie, you're so sweet to say that. I feel like yellow can be tricky to get right, but I think I'm going to just go for it and tweak it if I need to. I guess you never know sometimes unless you take a little bit of a risk!

  17. Great point and I agree! Love the idea of adding gold, I'm definitely going to use gold hardware, but a few other touches would be nice too. Thanks for your input!

  18. I agree, it's a tricky color to get right. I think that's what has me worried. I was actually thinking about just having the lids to the boxes color matched since I think that might be the right shade. In the right spot, cherry red would be stunning!

  25. I love that hutch! And I am such a fan of bold yellows! I'm no help when it comes to a paint name suggestion, but my favorite yellow ever is the shade on these thrifted lamps in my living room: http://www.thegatheredhome.com/2014/05/thrift-score-thursday-week-17.html. I love a sunflower yellow with a little warmth to it! I think if you do paint it yellow it will be stunning in your office! (And leopard print?! Amazing!)
