DIY shadow box

I've always loved shadow boxes. I just think they are so pretty and I love that you can fill them with so many different natural elements. While we were visiting Charleston, I saw these beautiful shadow boxes and inside them was some even more spectacular coral. The whole shop was filled with beautiful, unique things but they were all outrageously priced. So, I took a picture of it with the intent of doing a DIY project on it one day. Later, we were shopping around and I found these sea fans for $10! I immediately thought of the coral shadowboxes and the wheels began to turn.

When I got home I remembered that I had these two square frames from the Goodwill and the sea fan fit perfectly inside them. I was off to a good start...

Now, I just had to figure out how to turn it into a shadow box. So, I found these little wheels at A.C. Moore to use as "spacers".

I hot glued three of them together and drilled a hole down the middle, then I spraypainted them white.

Next, I hot glued the glass into place in the frame so it wouldn't move around.

I spraypainted the frame white and then I found some old plywood I had leftover in the garage.  I measured it to be exactly the same size as the frame and then cut it to the right size.  Next, I covered it with some thick white fabric, using a staple gun.

Then, I forgot to take a picutre of this, so I will try to explain it the best I can.  I put each stack of three wheels in each corner and then laid the frame on top of that.  Then, I screwed it all together, making sure that everything lined up.  The sea fan got a nice coat of gray spraypaint, because gray is my new favorite neutral.  And now they adorn our entryway...
