If you saw my post yesterday, you already know I'm making over my mom's house. What I didn't mention is that my mom is a master DIYer. She's a mix between Macgyver and Ty Pennington, seriously. I grew up with her painting, fixing, rearranging things. etc. It's part of what inspired me to do all the DIY things I do. She's the best.
I'm always up for a good before and after so I thought I'd share one she recently completed. Her home is very open and has high ceilings which means the pieces of furniture need to be substantial enough to not get lost in the space. We found this great hutch at a local antique mall and it was the perfect size with a great price. We thought it would be a perfect fit. We were wrong.
That curved piece at the top wouldn't fit in the niche cutout in the wall. Well she happened to have the top to a hutch hanging out in her garage (it's a long story) and it went perfectly with the base of this hutch. Once she covered the whole thing in black paint you'd never know it wasn't a match.
I love the details on the base and the original gold hardware.
She's building up quite the collection of milk glass and jadeite.
We're planning to use the original top with a dresser she already has. Once everything is painted to match, we'll style it up with books and other pretties for the living room.

ReplyDeleteHi, I have been looking into painting my great-grandmothers hutch as well. Do you mind sharing the steps you took to paint this and what color?
ReplyDeleteMy mom actually painted this so I'm not sure of the exact steps she took, but here are the steps I usually follow when painting something. Sand everything down and clean it really well. Then, prime it. I like Zinsser primer. Then I paint all the large flat surfaces with a foam roller and use a brush for the detailed parts. Once it's all finished you can add a top coat, but stick with a water based product so it won't yellow. Hope that helps!

ReplyDeleteI usually just make sure to use a good primer (I like Zinsser) and for the paint I just usually use whatever I have on hand or a lot of times I will use oops paint to save on costs. I like semi gloss because it gives you a little more durability and you can skip the top coat.
