Yet another message board....

I'm not sure what it is with me and message boards lately, maybe it's because I have an affinity for making list and this is one way you can keep track of different "to do" lists.  I think they are great and functional and this one could serve as artwork as well.

I started with this cabinet door...

Then I just flipped it over and used modge podge to attach old book pages to the back of it.  I added some hanging hardware and now it is a fully functional dry erase board or you could even just use it as a piece of art.  I actually thought about adding some knobs to the bottom so it could be used as a place to hang keys, scarves, etc.  I just might have to do that :)

This piece is available in our booth for purchase :)

Sunday

I'll give you a hint...

This weekend has been a whirlwind.  Lots of projects, a little shopping, and some great deals!  Ever feel like you need to go back to work to get a break?!?  Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I think I work myself too hard on the weekends because it's the only time I have to get things done and I want to take advantage of it.  Anyways...I made some major progress on my disaster DIY table and I'm hoping it will be done and ready to show you this week!

Here's a little hint....

Leave me a message

I've been working on a another message board that would be the perfect place to leave a little message or note.  It would also be great for reminders, memos, or even to post inspirational design photos and fabric swatches.  I followed the same method for this board as I did for this one I made for a Christmas gift.

I started with this corkboard from Goodwill.  I painted the frame white and recovered the corkboard using some spray adhesive and hot glue.  I added some leftover nailhead trim to the corners for a finishing touch.

I used this bird stencil from hobby lobby and some black craft paint....

to create this!  I'm hoping it will find a new home soon!  It's for sale in our booth

Tuesday

The Office

This project has been a work in progress for a while now and we finally finished up yesterday by adding the final touches and finishing details.

Before, the room was a sea of green and stripes.  The built ins were beautiful and the wood was so rich, but  you couldn't see that for all the stripes.

So here is what we started out with....

So, we started by applying a fresh coat of paint.  Next, we did some de-cluttering and reworked the room using some things the client already had in her home.  The scale of the desk before was just too small so she found a new desk, on craigslist, that was just right.  It makes a huge difference when the furniture pieces are to scale in a room.  I purchased a few extra accessories to fill in the blanks.  Then, we took a trip to Mary Jo's and my client fell in love with the window treatment fabric.  So, that set the tone for the design of the room.  She is very handy and actually made the window treatments herself as well as painted the entire room.

She also refinished this antique chest with a fresh coat of cream paint.  She did an awesome job! (you'll see the "after" in the following pictures)

and drumroll please.....

After....

We flanked the sides of the built in with two mirrors the client already had in other areas of the home.  They aren't identical in size, but similar enough that they work.

The old ceiling fan was replaced with this sleek, modern chandelier from Overstock.

The main function of this room is to act as an office for my client's husband who just so happens to be a landscape architect (hence the plans on the desk :)  Although I was tempted to paint all that dark wood, I'm really glad we didn't.  It gives a really rich, masculine feel.

This chair is a family heirloom, so we had it reupholstered in a more neutral fabric so it could be used for many years to come.

Break it down:

Paint: Martha Stewart    Top:Dune    Bottom: Snail Shell
Light Fixture: Overstock
Fabric: Mary Jo's
Accessories: Homegoods

Like I mentioned before, the cost for this project was pretty low because we used things the client already had, we just repurposed them.  It always amazes me what a little paint, some de-cluttering, and accessorizing will do!

Sofa Table Dresser

I'm running out of places in my house for new furniture.  I have taken advantage of every possible space in my house to add new things.  BUT, when I found this dresser I just knew I had to make space for it.  I liked the sofa table behind our couch before, but it was pretty generic and lacking in the storage department.  So, I thought why not add this dresser behind it?  Great storage and something a little different.  I love the pedestal legs it has, I think that keeps it looking less "dresser like."  I tossed around the idea to paint it a bright bold color to make a statement, but then I chickened out settled on white.  You can't go wrong painting something white.  That way if or when I get tired of this I can simply move it to another room.  So, now to the good stuff....

Before....

and after!  I decided to keep the original pulls for the drawers because I thought they worked really well with the piece.  (the ones on the top drawers are crooked in these pictures which I just noticed, but they just need to be tightened, oops...)

I immediately fell in love with these coral drawer pulls when I found them at anthropology...if you haven't figured it out yet, I've got a thing for coral....They didn't look quite substantial enough on their own so I got resourceful and found these toilet paper holder brackets in the garage that a friend had given me.  You may be asking yourself why would anyone save those?  I have no idea but I'm glad I did :)  I took the base off and spray painted it gold and they work perfectly.

Thursday

Kitchen Reno

Well not a "real" kitchen reno but a play kitchen reno.  A friend of mine contacted me about making a play kitchen for her daughter.  She wanted something different and not so cookie cutter like the ones you see in the store.  She told me the colors of her daughter's room and let me run with it.  I love making these because every one is different and you can get really creative with it.

So I started out with this nightstand.

the "burners" were made out of wooden disks found at Hobby Lobby....

Those are the only progress pictures I took unfortunately so if you have any specific questions feel free to ask!

and here it is all together...

Materials:
Fabric: Hancock Fabrics
Black Pom Pom trim, Yellow Pom Pom trim, & white trim: Hobby Lobby
Knobs: Hobby Lobby
Wood "burners": Hobby Lobby
Faucet: Thrift store
Chalkboards: Hobby Lobby
Yellow Chalkboard frame: part of a headboard I found on the side of the road (long story for another time:)
Sink Bowl: Dollar Store
Rod for Ruffle Skirt: Hancock Fabrics

Bonnie and Alivia, I hope you enjoy it for many years to come!  I enjoyed making it for you!

Sit and Stay a While

I love these chairs.  They would make me want to sit and stay a while.  I found them at Goodwill for $10 each and there were 4 of them.  I didn't even think twice before grabbing the tag and taking it to the front.  They were definitely in pretty shabby shape with a very awful reupholstery job, but I knew they could be great with a little paint and some new fabric.

I really liked the way the black paint looked so I just freshened them up with some satin black spray paint.  I purchased this fabric from Hancock's Fabrics.  I was drawn to it because it had a nice texture and looked very rich and classy to me.  I thought it would go nicely with the lines of the chairs.  I had these all done and ready to go to our booth when my mom told me she wanted to buy them from me.  She told me she wanted to have a "dwellings by DeVore original" (she's the greatest)  So off to her house they went.  Here are some of the afters....
