$10 desk

The office transformation is getting close to being finished!  This project was a little unexpected.  The desk I had before was just fine but nothing fancy.  It was actually from my husband's bachelor pad before we got married.  I spruced it up by painting it white and just recently added the magenta details to the top.  I was content with it but then I realized I could have a much more glamorous desk for $10.  My mom brought me a large piece of glass that a friend of ours was getting rid of due to a big move.  The glass started the wheels turning for this project.  I remembered that I had two wood trestle bases in the garage that I found at IKEA for $5 each.  They were such a good deal that I snatched them up knowing I would find a project for them one day.  I actually used two of them before when I made this desk from a door.

Anyways, on to the desk.  I started with two of these...

spraypainted them gold, and added the glass.

2 bases $10
glass Free
Total: $10

Sure I'll miss the storage but I've found by adding some desktop storage I get by just fine.  Now I've just got to find a way to hide those pesky wires.

Next up:

*Makeover the free chair I have sitting in my garage
*Make slipcover for wingback chair, also sitting in garage
*Have room wired for overhead light, waiting for it to get cooler for that one
*Try not to kill fiddle leaf fig tree

I used the same table legs in my office, except I sprayed painted mine silver. I like the glass top too. Nice!

I also have an open desk and it floats in the center of my room, so I have been thinking about how to hide my "pesky wires" also.

I have an idea for your situation, borrowed from desks designed to face into a public area ... a "modesty panel".

You could use ply, or MDF, or even sheetrock ... whatever you have on hand. Ultimately you would place it between the wall and the back legs of the desk; it could be attached to the legs or even possibly just lay up against them?

You can cut the board to whatever dimensions are needed to conceal the "works" (pesky wires) behind.

Paint the board the same color as the wall, and it should disappear! You could even paint a baseboard line at the bottom of the board, very trompe l'oeil.

Sadly this idea won't work for my floating desk If I ever come up with a solution to my situation I will post it on my blog.

Eager to see what you do!

are you at all concerned about the glass breaking? It looks fabulous. I would hate looking at my own thighs though.

Looks great! Such a creative idea. And visually takes up less space. I love it.

Looks beautiful! You just gave me a great idea. I have a glass table and I don't like the base. I'm going to try to find an alternative base(s) at IKEA or thrift shops.
Thanks.

I know it's a late comment to this post but I just recently found your blog and it is instant LOVE. I had the same dilema of hiding wires and what I did was attach some dollar store pearl and bead necklaces to them. They kind of remind me of those Chanel necklaces with all the different style chains, and pearls and beads grouped together. I used some those metal ties like the ones for garbage bags but without the paper around them and they worked like a charm. Let me know if you decide to try it. Best of luck.

So fantastic. What an inspiring place to get some work done as well. I struggle with my desk facing the wall, but I love your paintings above. So pretty to look at. Great feature on HWH.

Love your office, and I am dying over your wall color! What is it?!

I was hoping to find out the actual dimensions of the glass. I have a space about the same size and I love how it fits against that wall.

If you could get me the dimensions it would be a huge help!

I love the paintings behind the wall.... Where are they from?

Great idea. I just prefer if legs of the desk are the same color as the chair. It looks a bit misbalanced to me.

Thank you for your input! I have actually changed the chair since I did this post. That was just a $5 thrifted chair that I used until I could find what I wanted.

Where did you find/buy the sawhorses at?

They are from IKEA, here's the link: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10118971/
